FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

If you are like me you are enjoying these warmer and longer days with more hours of daylight!  Spring has sprung, (So have the weeds) and before we know it, the Summer Show Season will be upon us.

Your Directors have been working hard in preparation for their duties in coordinating their respective shows for this year.  Along with that, they and your Officers have been busy handling some major changes coming down from the National IH Collectors Club.

For those of you who frequent our website (www.nwihc30.com) you no doubt have noticed some subtle and some not so subtle changes we have had to make as a result of direction from our National Board of Directors.  When the National Insurance policy was renewed we found out that there is absolutely no coverage for and no sponsoring – reference to – advertising for – etc., for Tractor Pulls, Hay Rides, and/or Tractor Rides. Necessarily, our website was updated by removing the entire 2008 Tractor Pull schedule, (they said it was advertising). The 2008 Event Schedule was edited by removing any reference to tractor pulls right down to the name of some of the area shows being changed.  This may cause some of you to wonder if you are looking at the right show schedule.  You may also note that all pictures depicting tractor pulling were removed because our website and its contents are subject to review to ensure compliance with National’s Insurance policy.

I am available if anyone would like to discuss or has questions about the above changes, just give me a call at (360)697-6442 evenings or you can email me at bbennett@embarqmail.com .  Believe me when I say that these required changes were cast in stone from National and were completely driven by their Insurance Underwriter.

On a much lighter note, Chapter 30 has been asked by Chapter 15 (Minnesota) to

From Your President (cont.)

support their bid request to host the 2011 Red Power Round Up. We have submitted our letter of support to National.  If Chapter 15 gets the nod this puts a RPRU at one of the closest points distance wise to our members out here in the Northwest. They intend to hold their Round Up in Albert Lea, MN and have proposed quite a venue of activities.  We will keep you posted.

Lastly, as this is the last newsletter before the summer shows, I ask each of you to be ever cautious when loading, unloading, moving equipment, or driving your tractors and implements around at the different shows.  If you see something that is unsafe don’t wait for someone else to say something.  Safety is everyone’s job all year long. Let’s make it an Accident Free year!

Bob Bennett,

President

From the Secretary/Treasurer

Hello All,

I just received a reminder in the mail from the National Organization, that our membership dues are due in June.  This was the date established when Chapter 30 was first formed and has been that way ever since.  They do allow a grace period,  in that members have until September 1st to have their dues into the hands of the National Membership Secretary.  If you have not yet paid your dues, please do so as soon as possible.  Make your check payable to NWIHC 30, in the amount of $35.00.  Mail it to me, Tom Lundgren, at 12055 Topaz Lane SE, Olalla, WA  98359.  I will make sure your dues are forwarded onto the National Organization.  If you are planning on renewing at one of the shows that Chapter 30 will be at this summer, the Toledo Show is the absolute latest I can receive your

dues and get it to National without them or Chapter 30 having to drop you from the role.

I will be representing Chapter 30 at the Union Gap Show near Yakima, WA.  For those who have never been there, it is a real fun show, put on by the Central Washington Agricultural Society and Museum in Union Gap.  They have daily events and a very large static display as well as a swap meet.  There are many nationally known motel chains available locally in Yakima.  There is also dry camping in site.  Come for a day, or the entire weekend and enjoy sunny Eastern Washington.  If you would like more information on Union Gap, give me a jingle at 253-851-4517 or email me at olalla33@yahoo.com.

Tom Lundgren,

Secretary/Treasurer

Notes From the
Director In Charge...

I am sure that you are looking forward to the show season that is fast approaching.  Hopefully the winter was productive in your tractor shops and we will have an opportunity to see your treasures and visit with you at one of the shows.

The Chapter needs one more Director to fill in the remainder of Morgan Dunn's term as he has stepped down.  Morgan's resignation was for personal reasons and he assures us that we will see him over the show season.  If you may be interested in filling in as a director please contact me at 604-882-8542 or via email at jackbailey@telus.net

Lastly, please make safety a priority as we embark on what no doubtedly will be another great show season.

Jack Bailey

More From the Directors...

Hi Everyone,

Ken Woodard and I, with help from our wives, have a good handle on the clubs memorabilia. We sold a lot at our annual meeting and with the Directors help at the shows we will have a good year. This year we have Chapter 30 hats and T shirts. I am sure looking forward to the show season this year. We always have such a good time.

Dan Miller

Hi,

We are in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  We have waded in the Atlantic Ocean and yesterday, we stopped at Kitty Hawk where the Wright Brothers made their historic airplane flight.  We spent 2 days in Washington, DC and 3 days with our grandson in Newport News, Virginia.  We are having an incredible trip!!!

 Ken & Vicki Robison

(Currently Ken & Vicki are on a cross country trip traveling with their camp trailer.  They will be at the Red Power Round Up in June, where they will meet up with the rest of the Chapter 30 members who are heading that way).

I have been told by our illustrious, Director in charge, that the reasons for painting and re-painting on a Cub Cadet 100 should re-counted, for all to see and the owner of which ( name to be withheld for obvious reasons ) to be shamed for his inadequacies.

It all began on a dark and stormy night ---

"Junior", the Cub Cadet was ready for its top coat of Acrylic Enamel. I'm (I mean the owner) is a little frivolous about wasting paint, so an opened quart which had been saved from a year ago was used.

As the coat was applied, little "bumps" began appearing.  Thinking some dust had fallen from the rafters but could be sanded out; the "first" finish coat was completed.

Two weeks later, after sanding, a second top coat was applied.  Again, thousand of little bumps appeared. This time it was determined it was in the old paint itself. Don't ask me (I mean the owner) how it got there, but somehow it did.

Two months later, after again sanding and purchasing more paint, the 3 third top coat went on.

The paint looked good at completion, so clean-up began.  As I (I mean the owner) got ready to turn out the lights, he took one more look at the paint.  Turns out a bunch of big ole flies had decided to take an even closer look --- by swimming in the paint.  They did a masterful job of creating "snowmen" in the fresh and soft yellow.

Try #4 --- This time things went smooth, until a bird flew in from the open door to the shop ----

Try #5 --- My Wife bought me, (I mean the owner) a birthday present consisting of more paint along with a sheet of bird netting (I think the owner would have preferred a shotgun though)

Five coats, and "Junior" is now completed --- with all the extra weight, it should make a Dandy "Puller"!

Jack; are you happy now?

I'm, (I mean the owner) is thoroughly embarrassed!

From The Editor...

From the weather we’re having this week; I can honestly say “summer must be here”!  As I write this it’s 94 degrees out and it sure feels like July!

Brad & I are starting to “gear up” for the coming show season, and can’t wait to see everyone after a long, wet and  snowy winter!

Don’t forget that at all the Chapter 30 Sanctioned Shows; there will be a potluck BBQ  under the IH Tent on either Friday or Saturday night.  The chapter provides the meat, buns,  paper plates & plastic silverware, and all you have to bring is a potluck dish to add to the meal!  Don’t miss out on this terrific time of laughter, visiting and relaxing with new and old friends!

As always, please send me your want ads, “Helpful How-To Hints”, recipes & patterns or ideas for the Women’s Corner, and even write ups or pictures you’d like to share about related tractor events in your area.

We’ll see you this summer at the shows!

Women’s Corner

This time of year always brings on the family reunions, BBQ’s, graduation parties and potlucks, which we need to have some wonderful recipe to make and bring.    Salads just seem to fit the bill when the weather turns hot, so here is a recipe from Cheri Miller from Rochester, Washington.  It sounds great, try it and see!

Seafood Salad

Serves 12

Day before:  Trim crust from one large loaf of white bread & lightly butter each slice.

Cut into small cubes (15-20 per slice of bread)

Put in large bowl.  Add 1 large onion, finely chopped and 4 hard boiled eggs,

Finely chopped.  Toss lightly.  Cover and refrigerate over night.

In A.M.:  Add 2 ½ c. Mayonnaise (may need more)

                        1 ½ c. celery, finely diced

                        ½ lb. cooked salad shrimp

¾ lb. crab (or artificial crab pieces)

              Helpful Hints & Ideas...

From Ken Woodard:

To those with narrow-frame cadets that have loose steering, Todd Markle (Red Power March/April ’08, pg. 65) describes a simple, easy and unbeatable fix.  Most of this slip is at the left knuckle and steering arm connection.  Use a #7 hand taper pin reamer and from the front ream the hole and drive in a #7 taper pin.  If you need to enlarge the hole a bit to get the reamer started, use a 11/32” bit.  Be careful of hole alignment.

From Bob Bennett:

Bob’s Tech Tip on Installing Mylar Decals – I’m sure that at some point in time you have worked hard getting that new tractor or implement paint job as perfect as possible, only to end up with a mess when you tried to apply the new decals to your specimen.  Face it, these newer decals are a far cry from the old decals that you had to let soak in a bucket of water so you could slide the decal off the backing paper.  One trick that I have used is as follows:

Always “dry fit” your new Mylar decals first.  Get the feel of where you will be placing the decal before you do anything else.  Make sure that the fresh paint is hardened, because if it is tacky, your decal placement will not go smoothly.

I find it is usually better to remove the excess outer border material of the Mylar decals by using a sharp pair of scissors.  Sometimes when the decals are printed and stamped out, they are not always “centered” on the sheet leaving more material on one side than the other.

Once you have eyeballed or marked the leading and trailing edge of where the decal should be placed, (I use a white colored pencil and make light marks), I use a bottle of SPRAY Windex liberally applied to the surface where the decal will be installed.  Peel the backing material from the decal and try to place the center of the decal at the center of the location where you want to install the decal.  Work out from the center towards the ends/sides slowly and lightly using a squeegee to remove any air bubbles trapped under the decal.  Once the decal is perfectly placed you may use a soft cotton rag to carefully wipe the decal and surrounding metal free from any remaining Windex.  The purpose of the Windex is to provide a wet surface so you can move the decal around to get it properly aligned.  DO NOT use aerosol or foaming Windex, as it has a different chemical composition than the spray type Windex and may harm your new paint job.  Good luck!

From Tom Lundgren:

Tom found a great article on “Chaining and Hauling A Tractor” written by: Danny (Tiny Homan) and posted to the Yesterday’s Tractor website.  It was posted on May 18, 2008 (tip of the day).  With Tractor Show Season just getting underway this is a great article for you to go on line and check out!  There’s some helpful information in it, so get on line and read the article!  Always remember, “Safety First”!
